- Introduction

The Challenge

WA 211 required a website that balanced competing needs: connecting individuals in crisis to resources quickly while providing functionality for service providers, donors, and volunteers. The platform needed to be accessible across devices, intuitive for users under stress, and designed to build immediate trust with vulnerable populations.

- IMPLEMENTATION

Our Solution

We prioritized clarity and functionality over design complexity. The homepage presents users with immediate access options: phone, text, and online search. This multi-channel approach ensures accessibility regardless of user circumstances or device availability.

Resource categorization aligns with user needs rather than organizational structure. Categories include housing, food assistance, and mental health services, reducing navigation friction for individuals seeking specific support.

The responsive design accommodates mobile users, who represent a significant portion of the audience. Interface elements were sized for accessibility, and language was refined to be direct and clear. The homepage prominently displays institutional credentials and partnerships, including United Way affiliation and AIRS accreditation, to establish credibility and confidence.

The platform provides access to over 17,000 community resource listings. Service providers can submit, update, and manage their own program information. The architecture supports both individual users seeking help and organizational users managing resources.

- Conclusion

Key Takeaway

User-centered design for nonprofits means removing barriers, not adding visual complexity. Effective design for mission-driven organizations prioritizes usability and accessibility, which directly correlates with impact and user outcomes.
