You’re Starting a Website?
“77% consumers believe that a website makes a business appear more credible,” as a survey result conducted by Verisign. So we can tell how hugely valuable it is to have a website for your business or personal brand.
Site Savvy understands that it can be tough to get started sometimes. It is the reason why we are here to help you clarify some technical questions that you might have while starting your own website.
Let’s get to it!
What’s a domain name?
A domain (aka domain name) is a website address that brings people to your website. It’s what people type in their browser to get to the website that they want. It’s like a physical address that you type into a GPS to get to a store or your home.
Our Sitesavvy’s domain name is https://sitesavvy.com/. At SiteSavvy, we like to use hover.com as our domain registrar.
What is hosting?
People commonly mistake between web hosting and a domain by thinking that they are the same. The truth is they are two different things. Web hosting is where your website files are kept and stored.
In 1991, when the Internet became publicly available, we could build a website on our computer. All of our website files would be stored on the computer. So if we turned off our computer while someone was going through your website, they wouldn’t be able to view our website anymore.
Nowadays, hosting companies have some pretty powerful computer setups with firewalls, security etc. where we can rent a secured space to store our website files. It means that people could search and scroll through your website when our computer is turned off.
Some hosting companies have advantages and disadvantages, cheaper or more expensive options, specified for certain platforms or more general. At SiteSavvy, kinsta.com is our hosting provider that we use for all of our clients.
sitesavvy.com — Wait, where’s the .com?
All of us were used to using the .com at the end of every domain name. And now people start using .gov, .org, .net and so on, depending on the purpose of different organizations.
Overtime, a lot of .com domains have been used up, which means techy people have to get more creative by creating new Top-Level Domains (TLD’s). Now, we have many options for our TLD to choose from!
You just have to make sure you know what your TLD means and how to use them for your own specific website.
How do I pick a domain name?
Domain name is a big part of your and your organization’s identity and it needs to be easy for your customers to find. Simplicity is always the best, as we always suggest to our clients. We recommend you to explore some ideas for your domain names by using hover.com.
Ask yourself when thinking of your domain name, “If I were to tell someone to go to my website, would they have any further questions or would they be able to find it right away?”
The more questions someone has, or the more they have to think about how to get to your website, the less likely they will be your clients or customers.
Are you ready to start a website?
Domain names, Web hosting, and Top-level Domains (TLD’s) are some basic terms for you to understand before starting your website.
Here at Site Savvy, we are always excited to ease our clients’ process of starting their own online presence!
